The collection consists of twenty letters, written by Union soldier William H. Mickle to his wife Oleavia and other family members. These letters were written in the summer of 1864 during the Atlanta Campaign, primarily while Mickle was stationed near Marietta. Throughout the summer of 1864 Mickle continued writing through the battles around Atlanta then across the state and into Savannah that December. His writings tell of the progress of the campaign, discussing key figures and locations such as General Joseph Hooker, the Battle of Rocky Face Ridge, and the entrance into Savannah. Health, family, and personal matters are also addressed.

Records attest that provisions were received and issued at Savannah by Major George Robertson, during the months of August 1863, and January-September, November-December 1864. Provisions issued include beans, candles, coffee, corn meal, flour, meat, molasses, rice, salt, soap, sugar, vinegar, and whiskey.

Two letters from Union surgeon William C. Towle written to his wife. First letter dates February 26, 1865 and details Towle's time in Savannah with the army and the newly free enslaved people he has hired since arriving. "I am living well, I pay a colored woman three dollars a month to cook for me, I have a man to take care of my horses and another to wait upon me..." Second letter dates May 29, 1865 and details his time in Augusta, seeing Jeff Davis pass through the town, and his knowledge of newly emancipated enslaved people who are told to "not consider the word Freedom as meaning Freedom from labor." Towle ends his second letter by promising to send "a negro girl" to his wife.

Letters are from her father, James Rhind, while working in Savannah, Georgia; sisters, Liza Rose and Susan Barrett; brother, William Montgomery Rhind, while serving in Virginia; and husband, William Anthony Stokes, while serving in and near Atlanta, Georgia, and then Savannah. The collection also includes correspondence from Brig. Gen. William M. Gardner to William Montgomery Rhind; and a letter from Alfred M. The collection consists of correspondence between Mitchell and Nettie Fondren during his service with the 29th Georgia Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. Mitchell served mainly in Georgia and along the coast. His letters describe the evacuation of Savannah (Ga.), the battle of Chickamauga (Ga.), the siege of Chattanooga (Tenn.), and the Atlanta Campaign. Nettie's letters, many written from the Lucy Cobb Institute (Athens, Ga.), describe life during the Civil War and news of family and friends. The collection also contains correspondence from other family members or friends, photographs, and a scrapbook containing clippings pertaining to the lives of Robert and Nettie after the war.

The collection consists of four manuscript volumes titled Personal reminiscences, created by William Starr Basinger, dated 1889-1896. The four volumes of handwritten reminiscences include histories of the Basinger and Starr families; involvement of William Elon Basinger in Dade's Battle of the 2nd Seminole War in Florida; going to college at the University of Georgia; and the law profession. Volumes also contain details of Basinger's involvement in the Savannah Volunteer Guards (later the 8th Georgia Battalion) during the American Civil War. Basinger was stationed in Ft. Screven, Savannah, Ft. Boggs and Ft. Wagoner in Charleston, and near Richmond, VA, where he was captured and sent to prison on Johnson's Island, OH. Basinger also discusses his activities after the war including his move to Dahlonega, Georgia and his presidency at the North Georgia Agricultural College. The fifth volume in the collections, Savannah Volunteer Guards, is a composite typescript, taken in part from Basinger's Personal reminiscences.

The collection consists of papers of the Rev. Charles Colcock Jones family of Liberty County, Georgia from ca. 1749-1909. The early letters (1850-1861) are between Charles Colcock Jones and Mary Jones in Liberty County, Georgia and their son, Charles Jr., while at school in Princeton and Harvard and later in Savannah (Ga.) where he set up his law practice. The letters discuss social and family life, plantation life, politics and government, religious philosophies, and events leading up to the Civil War. From 1861-1865, Charles Jr.'s letters chronicle his involvement as an officer in the Chatham Artillery stationed along the Georgia coast near Savannah, then Charleston and James Island (S.C.), and Jacksonville (Fla.). After the war, the personal correspondence is mainly between Charles Jr., his mother Mary Jones, his wife Eva Eve Jones, and his brother Joseph Jones. There is also a smattering of correspondence regarding his law practice. The collection also contains two volumes of letters Eva Eve Jones wrote to family describing her travels through Europe in 1879, manuscripts of Charles Jr.'s writings on Georgia history, Charles Jr.'s speeches including an 1861 speech to the Chatham Artillery, and addresses (1886-1892) he gave before the Confederate Survivors Association. Also included is a copy of the original manuscript for William Bartram's book Observations on the Creek and Cherokee Indians attributed to Ephraim G. Sqier (1821-1888). The manuscript contains tracings of Bartram's drawing of prehistoric mounds, Creek towns, and Cherokee and Creek structures not found in the published work.
